Buddhist countries in Southeast Asia celebrate the New Year
This footage was filmed and produced 16 April 2024.
April is the time that some Buddhist countries in Southeast Asia celebrate the New Year. The massive water festivals are a very important part of this celebration, and are also a way to cool off in the hottest month of the year. This celebration takes place in mid-April and the ritual and cultural activities in each country have many similarities.
Celebrated annually from April 13 to 15 in Thailand, Songkran is probably the best-known and largest water festival.
Traditionally, Thais pay their respects to the Buddha by visiting local temples on the first morning of the New Year to make merit and offer food to the monks. They will also pour water over the Buddha statues, symbolizing purification and washing away sins and bad luck.
New Year in Cambodia, known as Chaul Chnam Thmey, is celebrated from April 13 to 15.
Just like in Thailand, like “water blessings,” Cambodians sprinkle holy water on the face in the morning, on the chest at noon, and on the feet at night. Although not as wild as Thailand, soaking is common as locals, armed with water balloons and squirt guns, make any unsuspecting passerby their target. You will also find traditional games on street corners.
This footage illustrates people in the streets of Phnom Penh, Cambodia during the Chaul Chnam Thmey celebrations.
