Sudan this week marks one year of open warfare that has shattered the foundations of the African country and caused desolation of biblical proportions.

The fighting in Sudan has left more than 14,700 people dead (41 a day), many of them civilians, as well as 8.6 million internally displaced, most of them to Chad or South Sudan, making it the largest displacement crisis in the world.

But beyond the hunger unleashed (half of the children - 14 million - urgently need food), the hundreds of rapes of women and girls, the massacres with the aroma of ethnic cleansing or the 19 million children who have dropped out of school, another heartbreaking figure underlines the sense of oblivion: the United Nations humanitarian response plan to attend to the population in desperate need has only received 5.8% of the funds required.

"The only way out of this horror is a political solution. At this critical moment, in addition to global support for aid, we need a concerted global push for a ceasefire in Sudan followed by a comprehensive peace process.
Coordinated international efforts will be essential to amplify joint action. This push for peace also means continuing to work on Sudan's democratic transition, supporting and empowering civilians, including women's rights groups, youth and others".
