The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has raised the status of Mount Ruang in Sitaro Regency, North Sulawesi, from level III Alert to level IV Warning.

Head of the PVMBG Geological Agency, Hendra Gunawan, announced the change in status effective from April 17, 2024, at 9:00 PM local time, with a recommended evacuation zone of six kilometers from the volcano's summit.

In order to avoid the threat of a tsunami due to the increasingly active volcanic activity, residents living on the west coast of Tagulandang Island have been evacuated. Mount Ruang has shown increased eruption activity, emitting pyroclastic clouds reaching approximately 1.7 kilometers.

The decision to raise the volcano's status was made to anticipate the possibility of a tsunami caused by large pyroclastic flows entering the sea. Residents living on the west coast of Pulau Tagulandang have been relocated to the east coast of Pulau Tangulandang as a precaution against potential tsunamis and pyroclastic flows resulting from Mount Ruang's explosive eruptions.

The volcanic unrest of Mount Ruang was triggered by two seismic events centered in the Maluku Sea. On April 9, 2024, a tectonic earthquake measuring 6.4 magnitude with a depth of 27 kilometers occurred 94 kilometers northwest of Pulau Doi, North Maluku. Five days later, on April 14, 2024, another tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 and a depth of 10 kilometers was recorded 122 kilometers southwest of Pulau Doi, North Maluku.

Mount Ruang, standing at 725 meters above sea level, is located in Tulusan Village, Tagulandang District, Sitaro Regency, North Sulawesi. PVMBG continues to conduct visual and instrumental observations from the Volcano Observation Post (Pos Pengamatan Gunungapi/PGA) located in Tagulandang District, Sitaro Regency, North Sulawesi.
