Tesla will lay off more than 10% of its 140,000-strong global workforce, according to reports.

The cuts at the company, which had nearly doubled its global workforce since the end of 2020, are just the latest example of the effects of increased competition and lower demand in the electric vehicle sector.
An email, which its CEO Elon Musk sent to staff over the weekend, attributed the planned job cuts to the need to "reduce costs and increase productivity", according to a Reuters report. He did not mention anything about slowing demand for electric vehicles or Tesla's sales.
"We have conducted a thorough review of the organisation and have made the difficult decision to reduce our workforce by more than 10% globally," Musk wrote in the message to Tesla employees. The email, first reported by Electrek, an electric vehicle news site.

This Monday, Musk posted on X: "Approximately every 5 years, we need to reorganise and streamline the company for the next phase of growth," in response to messages reacting to the layoffs and departure of two senior Tesla executives, Drew Baglino and Rohan Patel.
