UAE: Downpours in Dubai caused the equivalent of 2 years of rain in just one day
Dubai, United Arab Emirates - April, 17.
Dubai was inundated by a series of downpours on Tuesday and submerged in flooding caused by the equivalent of two years' worth of rain. Flooding in recent days has killed at least 18 people in neighbouring Oman.
Dubai, an Emirati city of several million people on the shores of the Persian Gulf, some 800 km southeast of Kuwait, is in an arid region, despite abundant humidity, given its proximity to the sultry Persian Gulf. Rainfall averages only a few centimetres a year.
The first rains on Tuesday, caused by a strong area of low pressure and cold air, fell before dawn and lasted throughout the day. At least 15 centimetres had officially fallen in Dubai by Tuesday night, according to airport observations.
"For context, most of the city's metropolitan area usually averages 7.5cm a year," wrote meteorologist Nahal Belgherze on X. "This is truly a historic event for the area," she added.
It rained for 18 to 24 months that day.
Much of the city was left with standing water that affected homes and businesses, thanks to extreme rainfall that added several centimetres in a short period of time, leaving it with little place to go on the flat, paved, sun-scorched area. The downpours were accompanied by frequent lightning, and each new storm brought more water to already saturated places.
Landslides and road collapses were reported, and in some places more than 20 cm of rain fell, according to local media reports. Bus services and metro lines were delayed. Teleworking and distance learning have been extended until Wednesday due to travel problems.
