STORYLINE:

The inaugural "Hong Kong Reading Week" kicked off on Saturday at New Town Plaza in Sha Tin, aiming to ignite public interest in reading.

This initiative is part of the broader annual "Hong Kong Reading for All Day," designated by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, which is scheduled to take place every April 23.

Organized by the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), in collaboration with the Hong Kong Publishing Federation (HKPF), the event offers a diverse range of activities both online and offline, catering to all age groups.

At the carnival, attendees have the opportunity to interact with authors and participate in parent-child workshops.

SOUNDBITE (Chinese): LAU CHUN, Under secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau
"The theme of the first Hong Kong Reading Week is 'Self/LIBRARY,' encouraging citizens to explore through reading, discover new aspects of themselves, gain fresh insights into various matters, and connect with more corners of the world."

"Hong Kong Reading Week" is scheduled to run from April 20 to 28, with a variety of reading activities accessible at public libraries, leisure and cultural venues, schools, and shopping malls.

The extended "Hong Kong Reading+" event will be held from April 10 to May 12, offering a total of 34 activities, including author talks, cultural showcases, and large-scale exhibitions, all designed to celebrate and elevate the culture of reading in Hong Kong.
