STORYLINE:

Kenya on Sunday hosted a Kung Fu tournament in the central Kenyan town of Kiambu, located on the outskirts of the capital, Nairobi.

Contestants aged 4 to 20 years, from eight clubs across the country, took part in the third edition of the Kenya Kung Fu Championship. The tournament was sponsored by the Chinese embassy in Kenya.

More than 50 contestants were awarded medals during the tournament.

Kevin Simiyu, a 19-year-old high school graduate, won a gold medal.

"It feels nice because Kung Fu gives you confidence in handling whatever is out there and dealing with mental health, dealing with people and associating with other kids out there."

Lillian Nduta, a 12-year-old junior secondary school student who beat tough competitors to win a gold medal, said that practicing Kung Fu since the age of nine has made her feel energetic, confident and optimistic.

"It helps for self-confidence and one can also use it for self-defense."

Tom Muturi, a young father, said that his two daughters aged four and seven years have become more focused, physically fit and confident after practicing Kung Fu.

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): TONY MUTURI, Parent
"It has built social skills. It has built the ability to run around with other children. I watch them being very athletic when they are running around. I watch them not to feel cowardly if anyone tries to push them around. They are taught not to fight, but I noticed they can stand up for themselves."
