More than 100 patients were evacuated when a fire broke out at the Philippines' largest public hospital on Saturday evening.

The blaze ripped through a storage room of the Philippine General Hospital in Manila, with some 140 patients wheeled out of the hospital as smoke filled its hallways on April 20.

The Bureau of Fire Protection - Manila (BFP-Manila) said the fire began at 11:16 pm and was extinguished at 11:36 pm. No injuries were reported.

Fire Superintendent Leo Andiso, deputy district fire marshal of BFP-Manila, said: 'The fire was just small, but the smoke from it caused the evacuation of patients and health-care personnel. All the patients were OK, they were transported by the doctors to other areas of the hospital.'

He added that the fire did not spread to the emergency room, while the rooms engulfed in smoke were ventilated.

Most of the patients were returned to their rooms on Sunday morning, local media reported.

Authorities were investigating the cause of the fire, which is believed to have been sparked by faulty electrical wiring.

The fire hit just a month after another blaze at the underfunded government hospital on March 13.

That fire began in the audio-visual room of the hospital's Department of Medicine, prompting the evacuation of around 180 people. No casualties were reported.
