An unfortunate Thai girl has a large crack in the middle of her forehead due to the rare condition morphoea.

Accountancy student Somruethai Sangkharat, 22, who studies at Rangsit University in Pathum Thani, shared her experience suffering the rare disease called morphoea that left her with a large groove on the centre of her forehead.

Speaking in the video, the young woman said she was not born with the condition, which began when a red patch appeared on her forehead when she was 14 years old.

She said that she was 'extremely stressed and anxious' as the discoloured lesion kept darkening and stretching toward her scalp over the years.

Somruethai said: 'I would cry every day because of the stress of having this line in my forehead that looks like a crack.

'I even visited a doctor and took prescriptions for over a year, but the symptoms did not improve and became worse as the darker bruise spread to my forehead and the roots of my hair. Many people were commenting on my appearance.'

When she was 17, the discoloured skin suddenly lightened, but left what appeared to be a line of sunken flesh in the middle of her forehead.

As her medicine failed to work, Somruethai said she began wearing bangs to conceal the facial 'butt crack'.

It was not until 2020, on a visit to a private hospital, that a doctor was finally able to diagnose her condition.

Somruethai said: 'The doctor told me that my forehead skin had hardened due to abnormally high collagen production.

'The doctor said there was no cure, and though injecting filler would temporarily improve my appearance, the wound might become inflamed.

'I decided not to get filler because I was afraid of the risk. I will just hide the crack since it's not very noticeable unless I point it out. I'm now trying to rebuild the confidence I had lost because of my disease.'

Assistant Professor Dr. Weena Phuthongkam of the Navamindradhiraj University in Bangkok said: 'Her symptoms are consistent with morphoea, a dermatological condition in which the immune system is overactive.

'Morphoea usually occurs by itself. It is not caused by external stimulus such as trauma or injury to the affected area.

'This condition is extremely rare and currently, there is still no permanent treatment, only measures to alleviate it to prevent it from spreading.'

Morphoea is a disorder caused by excess collagen deposition, causing scar-like lesions on the skin.

In certain cases such as the 'en coup de sabre' varian of the condition, the underlying tissues in the affected area may begin to atrophy and cause cosmetic deformities.
