An alligator was caught on a runway at an airport in Florida.

Footage shows wildlife officials capturing the massive animal at the MacDill Air Force Base with a rope in Tampa on April 22.

The 10ft-long alligator wandered onto the premises and found its way between the tires of a KC-135 aerial refuelling aircraft.

Officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission arrived at the scene to handle the situation.

Following the intervention, the animal was released into the nearby Hillsborough River.

Alligator sightings are not uncommon at MacDill Air Force Base. The base's most famous resident is Elvis, a 12-foot alligator known for frequenting its golf course.

MacDill Air Force Base confirmed that the alligator had been successfully relocated to the Hillsborough River with the assistance of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The base expressed gratitude for the support and humorously suggested that Elvis, the resident alligator, may have steered the newcomer away from its usual territory.
