STORYLINE:

The second edition of the Kenya Power E-Mobility Conference opened in the capital of Nairobi on Tuesday, as the East African country seeks to accelerate the adoption of green modes of transportation.

The two-day e-mobility conference is organized by Kenya Power, the state-owned electricity distributor.

It brings together more than 200 delegates, including government officials, donors, and e-mobility experts from around the world, to explore innovative and transformative solutions to decarbonizing the transport sector.

SOUNDBITE (English): ALEX WACHIRA, Principal secretary, Kenyan Ministry of Energy and Petroleum
"The demand of power, we are seeing it increase, and we anticipate by the year 2030 a substantial amount of our power demand -- probably 20-25 percent of our power demand -- is going to come from our E-mobility on our own and that will translate into lower power bills. Why am I saying so? Because as we increase our uptake of power, so do we have a lower weighted average cost of power cost."

In September 2023, Kenya developed a framework for charging and battery-swapping infrastructure to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). This ensures the establishment of safe, reliable, accessible, and affordable charging services.

EVs accounted for 1.62 percent of the 165,913 vehicles registered in Kenya in 2023. The country aims to reach 5 percent by 2025, according to Kenya's Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority.
