Zurich Zoo built new homes for its Panthera big cats.

The newly installed shelter called 'Panterra' includes a catwalk, which is a 17-meter-long bridge designed to facilitate the rotation of endangered big cats such as tigers, lions, and snow leopards.

The catwalk uses a rotation principle, allowing the big cats to swap areas via the animal bridge regularly.

The zoo spokesman said this enhances animal welfare and provides visitors with captivating insights as the catwalk traverses over the heads of zoo guests.

The zoo added: 'It offers a divided habitat for all big cat species, ensuring visual and spatial separation while maximizing interactions and sensory experiences.'

The catwalk, manufactured by a steel construction company in Graubunden, used 28.5 tons of steel. The bridge spanned 17 meters and weighed 15 tons, featuring elements such as spruce tree trunks and protruding branches to mimic natural environments.

In addition to the catwalk, feeding cable cars will stimulate the big cats' natural hunting instincts, offering them meat that swiftly moves through the facility on a cable car system.

Furthermore, the zoo is undergoing renovations to create a dedicated habitat for insects and spiders, aiming to raise awareness about the declining biodiversity of invertebrates. Guests can explore the insect house and observe a diverse array of beetles, bugs, and spiders up close without the barrier of separating glass panes.
