A Spanish energy expert said on Wednesday that the country still has plenty of work to do to achieve its goal of fully transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable power sources, though it has made positive progress in renewable power production.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Catalan): LAURA PEREZ SANCHEZ, Energy expert and researcher at Autonomous University of Barcelona's Institute of Environmental Science and Technology
"We must compare Spain's progress with the needs of the future and find out what we need to do to attain an energy mix that's entirely based on renewables. In that sense, we still have a lot of work to do, but just on a European level, we are doing fairly well."
According to Spain's National Energy and Climate Plan, the country aims to generate 81 percent of electricity from renewable energy by 2030.
Spain estimates that the transition to renewable energy will receive an investment of 294 billion euros by 2030. Eighty-five percent of this is expected to come from private sector funding, and the remaining 15 percent from public sources including the European Union.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Catalan): LAURA PEREZ SANCHEZ, Energy expert and researcher at the Autonomous University of Barcelona's Institute of Environmental Science and Technology
"We need a new vision of the energy system upon which there will be huge consumption demands and that will require investment and social change that we need to begin considering very seriously."
