This is the terrifying moment electric sparks from a power line showered a road during a storm in Thailand.

Dashcam footage shows powerful gusts blowing coconut tree fronds onto high-voltage cables along a highway in Chiang Rai province on April 24.

The lines flickered briefly as the coconut leaves and bright orange sparks fell in front of cars.

Onlooker Roen Nambun said: 'There was a coconut tree on the left side of the road. Its leaves were blown off during the storm. Luckily, no one was hurt.'

The Thailand Meteorological Department forecasted that day that northern Thailand, including Chiang Rai province, would experience hot to very hot weather during the day, with haze and isolated thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and hail in the afternoon.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are entering their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
