Dar es Salaam, Tanzania - April 25, 2024

Storyline:
Flash floods in Tanzania have resulted in 155 deaths and 236 injuries, along with extensive infrastructure damage, as heavy rainfall has affected many parts of East Africa, triggering floods and landslides.

In Kinondoni, one of five districts in Tanzania's capital city of Dar es Salaam, many roads were flooded and residents had to splash their way across the river. Traffic jams were also seen in the area.

The death toll from flash floods in Tanzania has risen from 66 to 155, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said Thursday.

About 200,000 people were affected in 14 provinces across the country, and more than 10,000 houses were damaged. Most schools affected by the flooding have been temporarily closed, he said.

Majaliwa said the government has taken measures to mitigate further disasters.

The Tanzania meteorological authorities said heavy rains are expected to continue until May due to the El Nino phenomenon.
