STORYLINE:

Kenyan President William Ruto Thursday commissioned the completion of the Chinese-built parliament building in the country's capital of Nairobi.

The 28-storey Bunge Tower, which cost 9.6 billion Ksh (about 72 million U.S. dollars), will house offices for the country's members of parliament.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the building, the president noted that he expects a "world-class" performance from Kenyan Members of Parliament (MPs).

SOUNDBITE (English): WILLIAM RUTO, Kenyan President
"It's my pleasure this morning to celebrate the culmination of a highly symbolic development project which is a significant milestone on the Kenya parliament's historic journey of growth as a national institution of critical importance. There's no doubt that the government has invested a great deal of public resources to provide our legislators with modern and high-quality amenities to enable them discharge their functions."
