STORYLINE:

Hannover Messe 2024, Germany's leading annual industrial trade fair, concluded on Friday.

The exhibition has a clear emphasis on carbon-neutral production and hydrogen fuel cells.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): VINCENZO NUGNES, Associate researcher of German Aerospace Center
"So this is DLR, the German Aerospace Center. We are researching clean energy for the future sustainable aviation. Here we have liquid hydrogen aircraft. With the liquid hydrogen, we will power a gas turbine where we will have hydrogen combustion. But we have as well as fuel cells in the belly of this aircraft. So with the fuel cell, we can produce electric energy directly on the aircraft from the liquid hydrogen. The electric energy is used to drive electric motors that will drive the additional propellers of this aircraft."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): JACOB GRUNNET, Exhibitor of Shanghai Electric
"What we have here is a model of a 16-megawatt floating offshore wind turbine. So it's a very big turbine. The blades are more than 125 meters long. Often in case, the turbine is placed on one of the pillars. In this case, it's placed in between and this increases the stability. So we can reduce the size of the foundation, saving money, saving material. And at the same time, we make it easier for construction at the harbor."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): ERIC SCHWARZER-FISCHER, Exhibitor of Fraunhofer
"This is our new research project here, an efficient indoor farming and controlled environment agriculture (CEA) system. It's an innovative method for plant cultivation which takes place in a closed system under controlled conditions. The CEA offers important advantages because of its high yields per hectare and per liter of water used, a high degree of automation, low consumption of fertilizers and pesticides, and a high yield of security."
