STORYLINE:
During the 2024 Zhongguancun Forum, a sub-forum was held to spotlight the remarkable scientific and technological achievements of women.
Here, how to promote women's participation in the field of technological innovation has become a global topic of discussion.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): QUARRAISHA ABDOOL KARIM, President of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS)
"When we think about science, technology, and innovation for all, all of society, how can we exclude half the world's population? We have to have a Sustainable Development Goal 5 to ensure gender equity and equality. The reality is that in science, technology, and innovation, which is such an important tool to accelerate progress, we still have women under-represented.
We have to have the visibility that if you can see a scientist and you can see and we've seen a number of initiatives that have been profiling the contributions women have been doing, encouraging women, young women to pursue careers in science. And we've seen a steady improvement.
Numbers are important. Role models are important. Recognition that women have an important other view and complementary view to bring to knowledge generation, is what's gonna ensure all of our survival and that we do have that sustainable future that we imagine."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): ASTRID SCHERER, Vice President and Global Head of Product Development and Performance Excellence, Bayer Pharmaceuticals
"I think we women should step up. We should, let's say, in China as well as worldwide. I would believe we need to step up by basically contributing to the work and we do that, but also by showing what we contribute."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Beijing.
