Officials converted a classroom into a makeshift swimming pool to help students cope with temperatures soaring past 40 degrees Celsius in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh.

Footage from April 28 shows primary school students paddling in the shallow water in their classroom.

The school's Principal Vaibhav Rajput said: "The mercury level has been between 38 to 40 degrees Celsius for the past few days. This has reduced the number of children in the school drastically.

"But after a classroom of the school was filled with water, children started coming. They are now studying and are also getting relief from the heat by swimming."
