Beachgoer killed after being struck by motorboat's propeller during duck-catching race
A beachgoer was killed when he was struck by a motorboat propeller during a duck-cathing race.
Hanzel Samillano Buyco, 29, joined the bizarre contest at the beach hoping to win the 2,000 PHP (27 GBP) cash prize for his wife and daughter in Lau-an town, Antique province, the Philippines, on April 29.
Footage shows father-of-one Hanzel and the other villagers paddling toward the duck while it was floating around 10 metres from the shore.
However, while the locals were looking for the creature, a motorised wooden canoe piloted by Mark Michael Acosta, 31, went roaring into the contest area.
The pilot appeared to be showing off, with onlookers showing 'wow, it's an exhibition' as he roared through the shallows.
Tragically, he whizzed toward Hanzel as he was emerging from the water, hitting him on the head while the propeller blades cut into his neck and shoulders.
Lifeguards carried a limp Hanzel back to land as a trail of red was seen in the water around him.
Medics tried to stem the bleeding but he died from his wounds at the scene.
A Lau-an Municipal Police Station officer said: 'We have already arrested the suspect and seized his motorboat for investigation.'
The boat driver Michael allegedly claimed he did not see Hanzel while accelerating.
He said he was 'too enthusiastic' while practicing for the local festival's boat race.
He was detained at the Lau-an Municipal Police Station for further legal proceedings.
