New York cops cleared the barricades made by protesters at Columbia University.

The NewYork Police Department (NYPD) responded to address escalating 'violence and property destruction on the university's campus'.

NYPD Deputy Commissioner Operations Kaz Daughtry announced the deployment in a video posted on May 1.

The officer said: 'Columbia has requested our assistance to take back their campus, which has seen disturbing acts of violence, forms of intimidation &destruction of property.'

The NYPD's intervention dispersed the encampment, and individuals barricaded within university buildings.

The deputy commissioner added: 'We are in constant communication with university officials. Our priority is and always will be public safety for all.'
