Vultures squabble and compete over the putrid carcass of a bull Elephant killed in a fight.
It is rare to find an Elephant carcass in the African bush, and even more unusual near the side of a road. This bull African Savanna Elephant (Loxodonta africana) was killed in a fight with another bull. Park rangers removed the Elephant’s head and tusks, and then the scavengers moved in. The smell of the rotting carcass was overpowering! When we arrived, the Elephant carcass was swarming with White-backed Vultures (Gyps africanus), as well one huge, pink-headed Lappet-faced Vulture (Torgos tracheliotos). Lappet-faced Vultures are important to other vulture species, as they are the only vulture in Kruger National Park capable of penetrating the thick hides of large mammals like Elephants. The White-backed Vultures actively competed for food, attacking one another and making their hissing calls, reminiscent of the Ring Wraiths in Lord of the Rings.
