Uk submarine doing a cold move on Loch Long in Argyll Scotland from Coulport to Faslane on the Gare Loch

What is a cold move?

A cold move is where a ship (or submarine) is moved from one berth to another within a harbour, but not under its own power (i.e. the power plant is “cold”.

The term comes from the age of steam ships, when the boilers would be literally cold for these moves).

Within the naval dockyards cold moves are conducted by a QHM (Queen’s Harbour Master) pilot who will come onboard the ship and coordinate the tugs that move the ship. Ship’s company will manipulate the various ropes and wires as needed. It’s a fairly routine operation and usually goes smoothly.
