A government primary school in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj district has turned a classroom into a swimming pool. Footage filmed on Monday shows students in their school uniforms trying to swim and playing around in the classroom.

Principal of the school, Vaibhav Rajput said that heat had led to a decrease in the attendance of students in the school, due to which the school authorities took the decision. The children were dressed in their school uniforms. The classroom was first emptied, and tables and chairs removed, before letting water in. Amid a heatwave in the state, measures are being taken to ensure that students do not suffer the consequences.

The extreme measures were taken due to large parts of India are battling an intense heatwave, with some regions experiencing temperatures as high as 45 degrees Celsius. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued red and orange alerts, cautioning the public about the persisting extreme heat conditions.
