Boy, 11 killed by being struck in the groin with cricket ball
A schoolboy was killed after he was struck in the groin with a cricket ball in India.
Shaurya Kalidas Khandve, 11, was bowling on the pitch when the batter's powerful strike sent the ball toward his crotch at the Jagatguru Sports Academy in Pune, Maharashtra, on May 2.
CCTV footage shows the schoolboy's tragic last moments as he was seen bent over in pain from the impact. He was able to stand back on his feet - only to keel over seconds later, prompting the other boys to rush over and try to wake him up.
They later carried him off the pitch and rushed him to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
A case of accidental death was filed at the Vimantal Police Station on May 4.
Assistant Inspector Sachin Dhamane, the investigator for the case, said: 'We have registered a case of accidental death and a probe has been launched. We will be examining the autopsy report and will be speaking to the players on the ground.'
Shaurya, also known as Shambhu, was a passionate sports enthusiast with dreams of becoming a professional wrestler, according to his family.
His uncle, Bandu Khandave, said: 'In Shaurya's unfortunate passing, we have lost a bright young boy. He aspired to become a wrestler and had started training hard for it. This incident highlights the need to take all the safety precautions while playing.'
