Storyline:
The death toll from the collapse of an under-construction building in South Africa on Monday has increased to six, authorities said on Tuesday, while rescue work is continuing to locate the 48 people trapped beneath the rubble.
The multi-story building came down shortly after 14:00 on Monday afternoon in the coastal city of George, located about 400 kilometers east of Cape Town in the Western Cape province. The causes for the collapse, which included an underground parking garage, are still under investigation.
In an update provided at noon on Tuesday, the municipal government of George said that 27 patients have been removed from the rubble, leaving 48 persons unaccounted for. It confirmed that six patients have been declared deceased.
More than 100 emergency personnel are currently involved in a rescue operation to retrieve the trapped construction workers, aided by several volunteers and civil society groups, according to the Western Cape government.
Rescuers are working as fast as they can and have been in contact with a number of people still trapped under the debris.
Locals are still in a state of shock over the disaster, with one describing how the building came dramatically crashing down through the underground garage.
Meanwhile, a makeshift shelter has been set up for families who are anxiously waiting to hear news about their missing loved ones.
Emergency teams say that search and rescue efforts will continue until every one of the missing victims has been accounted for. Meanwhile, structural engineers have started carrying out investigations to establish what caused the building to collapse.
