A girl was killed and her sister was injured when their house wall collapsed during a storm in northeastern Thailand.

Surapha Buchapan, 8, and her sister Siriwol, 10, were sheltering inside their rudimentary home when the strong winds blew over one of the heavy walls on May 6.

Residents pulled the schoolgirls from the rubble and rushed them to the Muangsamsib Hospital. However, Surapha died from the severe injuries caused by the breeze block bricks crushing her.

Their grandfather Seebu Aimoat, 59, said the rest of the family was outside while the two girls were taking cover from the rain indoors. He said a sudden squall battered the neighbourhood and caused their home to collapse.

He said: 'Surapha was still conscious and said that she had chest pain, so I asked my neighbour to take her to the hospital.

'However, she died at the hospital. Her sister Siriwimol survived and is now safe, but doctors still required her to stay at the hospital to monitor her condition.

'Surapha's body is still at the hospital, and almost the entire village was destroyed by the storm. There's been no electricity since last night after the electricity pole broke.'

The family's neighbour, Charoen Panyat, 84, said dozens of houses were damaged by the storm.

He said: 'I have been living here for a long time, but I have never seen a storm as severe as this one.'

The Thai Meteorological Department had issued a warning about the summer storm in northern Thailand, including Ubon Ratchathani province.

The agency said southerly and southeasterly winds were prevailing across the north, northeast, east, and central regions of Thailand, causing possible thunderstorms and hail on May 6 and 7.

Locals were advised to avoid outdoor activities during the inclement weather.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
