STORYLINE:

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is implementing strategies to unlock human capital development, said Damtien Tchintchibidja, vice president of the ECOWAS Commission.

At the 2024 ECOWAS Human Capital Development Technical Conference in the Ghanaian capital of Accra, Tchintchibidja remarked that West Africa needs to advance the potential of its youthful population to ensure a sustainable economic and social path forward.

But due to limited opportunities, Tchintchibidja said, the full potential of the young population is not being fully harnessed. She recognized the challenges of high unemployment, widespread illiteracy, and restricted access to basic social services. Tchintchibidja said that women bear the brunt of these issues disproportionately.

ECOWAS has introduced and actively supported member states' national human capacity development (HCD) strategies, Tchintchibidja said. She said that the ECOWAS HCD project is in its second phase, with an intensified commitment to unlocking and nurturing the full potential of citizens.
