A bizarre Thai curry made from sour fish entrails was listed as one of the worst foods in the world by a travel website.

The pungent meal from southern Thailand called 'kaeng tai pla' in the local dialect is made from fish entrails cooked in spicy curry paste.

However, despite being a favourite for several decades, it became part of the 100 Worst Rated Food in the World list by Taste Atlas.

TasteAtlas described the dish by saying: ‘Other additions usually include dry fish, diced eggplant, bamboo shoots, string beans, or other vegetables. Because of its intensity and strong, pungent aromas, kaeng tai pla is best served with steamed rice on the side.

‘Traditionally, this Thai curry was only prepared with fish, and most varieties do not use coconut milk.'

Kaeng tai pla's spicy paste was made from chilli peppers, galangal, shrimp paste, turmeric, shallots, and lemongrass.

There was objection to the ranking from overly sensitive Thais about the ‘favourite dish' being in the list, and two weeks later on April 16, it was removed from the worst dish lineup - and instead listed another Thai curry dish kaeng hang le in the fifth place.

Kaeng hang le was rated 1.9 stars following Blodpalt from Finland in first place with a 1.5-star rating.

It was described as: ‘Kaeng hang le is Northern Thai curry variety that was modeled on a similar Burmese dish. The dish consists of a curry base that is usually made with dried chili peppers, lemongrass, galangal, shrimp paste, garlic, and shallots, while other ingredients usually include pork, mainly pork belly, tamarind juice, peanuts, pineapple, and shallots.'

It was preceded by Bocadillo de sardinas from Spain, Hákarl from Iceland, and Yerushalmi Kugel from Israel, respectively.

Apart from Hang Lay Curry, other Thai dishes were also listed, including Deep-Fried Silk Worms (Hon mhai) in the 27th place, Thai Meat Hotpot with Galangal and Lemongrass (Chim chum) in the 42nd place, Phat phrik in the 64th place, and Mu nam tok in the 67th place.
