Floods caused by heavy rains in southern Brazil have already left 100 dead and 1.5 million people affected, with more storms expected to hit the region even harder, regional authorities said.

In addition, the Civil Defence has so far counted 131 people missing and 362 injured in the unprecedented rains and floods that have mainly affected the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

So far, 401 municipalities have been affected, "practically the entire state," said Eduardo Leite, governor of Rio Grande do Sul, the region hardest hit by the rains, at a press conference.
