Fire crews today tackling blaze that ripped through a leisure centre
Fire crews were today (Fri) tackling a blaze that had ripped through a leisure centre overnight.
Dramatic aerial photos show the aftermath of the inferno at the Clarendon Leisure Centre in Salford.
The roof of one section of the building appears to be completely collapsed while the interior has been gutted.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue said crews were called at around 2.45am on Friday morning (May 10).
Eight fire engines from across the region were on hand to tackle the blaze at its height.
This morning, the response had been scaled back to four engines on site as firefighters dampened down the site.
A spokesman said: "Road closures remain in place around the incident this morning while firefighters damp down any remaining hotspots and work with emergency service partners and the local authority to keep the scene safe."
"We expect to remain at the scene throughout the rest of the day."
"We ask that local residents and members of the public continue to avoid the area while crews carry out their work."
A spokesperson for Salford Community Leisure, which runs the centre, said: "Overnight, there has been a major fire at Clarendon Leisure Centre, which has damaged a significant part of the building."
"Emergency services were called and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service and the Police remain on the scene dealing with the incident."
"The centre will be closed whilst an investigation into the incident continues."
"Customers should not attempt to visit the centre and we will be in touch with our members as soon as possible."
Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett thanked fire crews on social media, adding: "Really upsetting to see the scenes at Clarendon Leisure Centre."
