STORYLINE:

A business summit was held in Barcelona, Spain, on Friday to bolster ties and cooperation between the city and China's Shanghai.

Focusing on areas of mutual interest such as financial services, the digital economy, smart cities, and tourism, the event was attended by the deputy mayors responsible for economic promotion of their respective cities.

The Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce promoted its city with a presentation entitled "Invest in Shanghai, Share the Future." The presentation was attended by some 200 representatives of companies, business organizations, and public authorities from China and Spain.

During the event, China's Freshippo retail chain signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Spanish olive oil producer Borges Branded Foods.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): JERRY JI, Vice general manager of Freshippo
"This kind of event brings our partner and us together. We sit together and we have a very constructive dialogue face-to-face. With this dialogue, we build up trust and a strong collaborative relationship."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Catalan): JAUME ROIG, Managing director of Borges Branded Foods
"We believe that this type of partnership helps us a lot to reach Chinese households with high-quality products that promote a healthy, Mediterranean way of life."

The MoU signed between the two companies was just one of a number of cooperation agreements signed at the summit by Chinese and Spanish firms and organizations, including the port authorities of both cities.

SOUNDBITE 3 (Catalan): BERTA PEREZ PEY, Director of Internationalization and European Projects at Barcelona Chamber of Commerce
"Events like this show the interest there is from our companies to go to China, but there's also increasing interest from Chinese companies to establish themselves here in Barcelona."

Barcelona and Shanghai are celebrating 23 years as twin cities this year.
