STORYLINE:
Kenyan President William Ruto on Friday led a nationwide tree-planting campaign in Kiambicho Forest in Maragua, central Kenya.
Ruto said that the day was set aside by the cabinet in honor of those who lost their lives in the floods that have ravaged various parts of the country.
The president pointed out planting and growing trees is a means of mitigating climate change-induced droughts and floods.
Ruto said that the government has set a target of planting 200 million trees across the country. He announced that government-led tree-planting exercises would continue every day for the next six months, beginning on Monday.
According to Kenyan authorities, floods have killed more than 260 people and displaced over 378,000 others as heavy rains of 200 mm a day pound various parts of the country. The crisis has affected 41 out of 47 counties, with most of the displaced people living at congested camps in schools and churches.
