UK: Activists Shatter Magna Carta Enclosure in Protest - Demanding Urgent Action Against Climate Crisis
London, UK - May 10, 2024.
In a bold act of protest, two supporters of the Just Stop Oil movement have shattered the glass enclosure surrounding the Magna Carta at the British Library. Reverend Dr. Sue Parfitt, 82, and Judy Bruce, 85, took a stand demanding urgent government action to halt oil, gas, and coal extraction and burning by 2030.
The dramatic incident unfolded at approximately 10:40 am, as the pair entered the British Library and broke the protective glass surrounding the historic Magna Carta. They affixed themselves to the enclosure with a sign proclaiming, "The government is breaking the law," questioning whether the government considers itself above the law.
Parfitt emphasized the urgency of addressing climate breakdown, highlighting the government's failure to adhere to climate laws and the pressing need to prioritize the well-being of future generations over short-term economic interests.
Bruce echoed these sentiments, citing the dire warnings of climate scientists and the government's inadequate response to the impending crisis. She urged immediate action to break free from dependence on fossil fuels, stressing the need to act decisively to avert catastrophic climate change.
A spokesperson for Just Stop Oil drew attention to Clause 39 of the Magna Carta, emphasizing its relevance in today's context and condemning corporate influence over legislation that undermines the rights of individuals.
This protest coincides with a high court ruling deeming the government's climate policy unlawful for the second time, underscoring the urgent need for stronger measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Despite legal setbacks, the government has proceeded with new oil and gas licensing rounds, exacerbating concerns about its commitment to combating climate change.
As climate scientists express despair over the trajectory of global temperatures, calls for civil disobedience are gaining traction as a necessary means of catalyzing meaningful action. With the threat of devastating consequences looming, individuals and activists continue to press for urgent and decisive steps to address the climate crisis.
