STORYLINE:

Croatian sinologist Ivana Buljan has hailed the significance of the Croatian Council of Sinologists, which was established on March 21 through a video conference.

Buljan, head of the Department of Sinology at the University of Zagreb, has become a member of the council.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Croatian): IVANA BULJAN, Head of the Department of Sinology at the University of Zagreb
"The establishment of the Croatian Council of Sinologists is extremely important, because it is one of the first steps towards the opening of the Croatian academic community to the Chinese academic community.
We hope that this association will be a training ground for the opening of scientific, academic meetings with the Chinese academic community."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Croatian): IVANA BULJAN, Head of the Department of Sinology at the University of Zagreb
"I'm hoping for some joint symposia and projects with Chinese scientists, and that makes me really happy."

She welcomed the move by the University of Zagreb in March to elevate the minor in sinology to a major. The university became the first institution of higher education in Croatia to confer degrees in sinology.

SOUNDBITE 3 (Croatian): IVANA BULJAN, Head of the Department of Sinology at the University of Zagreb
"This is the first study of Sinology in Croatia. It is an upgrade of the free study. The regular study is based on the free study program, but it is about expanding that free study.
And I think it is something very important, really historically important, because for the first time we have Sinology studies in Croatia, and there is no need to discuss the importance of China and Chinese culture."

SOUNDBITE 4 (Croatian): IVANA BULJAN, Head of the Department of Sinology at the University of Zagreb
"According to the portals, there will be great interest in the study, and we expect that there will be a considerable number of interested candidates, who will come here out of real enthusiasm, because they will be the first generation of sinology students in Croatia."
