Juvenile elephant takes a tumble while being chased by mother
A juvenile elephant took a tumble while being chased by his mother.
The young jumbo tried to wander away from the herd but the alert mum took notice and ran after her offspring in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, on May 5.
Footage shows the wild elephant rushing down a slope before tripping and falling on his side. The mother almost tripped over her baby but quickly helped the juvenile to stand up and return to higher ground.
Wildlife photographer Papua Supphaphonya, who was watching the animals, said: 'The mother kept the younger sibling away from the newborn, but it ran away from her.
'The younger elephant fell in the middle of the road.'
As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century.
