Towns in West Sumatra were left in ruins after flash floods ripped through the area on May 12.

Footage shows buildings destroyed, car damaged, and streets submerged by a mixture of floodwater, mud, and stones in the Agam regency.

The National Disaster Management Agency reported that 44 people were killed as a result of the flooding.

Flash floods hit four districts in West Sumatra, Sunday 12 May 2024. As a result, 44 people died.

This video shows flood material in the form of water mixed with mud and stones as well as large logs scattered in residential areas.

Apart from killing 44 people, this flood also damaged a number of houses and public facilities in West Sumatra.

The National Disaster Management Agency reported that, based on today's developments (Monday 13 May 2024), 44 people died as a result of this disaster.

"The update as of 13.00 is that the number of victims who died was 44 people, with details that 19 died in Agam, 14 in Tanah Datar, 2 in Padang Panjang, 1 in Padang City, 8 in Padang Pariaman," said Head of the Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Abdul. Muhari, in a press conference, Monday (13/5/2024).

Abdul said that the Padang Panjang to Tanah Datar areas were the areas most affected. Because the area is close to a river.

"Well, Padang Panjang, Agam, Padang Pariaman and Tanah Datar are actually administrative areas close to each other, and are flowed by rivers which also flow in Agam, Tanah Datar, Padang Panjang," he said.

"These are the ones most affected by the rain lava floods, because they are closest and have the most areas traversed by the rain lava flood channels," he said.
