This is the shocking moment an Indian politician slapped a voter who called him out for allegedly jumping the queue at a polling station.

Footage shows Annabathuni Siva Kumar, Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Tenali's YSR Congress Party, seen in the video in white, slapping a local who objected to him cutting the line at the voting centre in the Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh on May 13.

When the man in pink retaliated, Annabathuni's supporters descended on him and also struck him.

The Election Commission of India said it has ordered a detailed probe into the attack.

Chief Electoral Officer Mukesh Kumar Meena told local media: 'We have live webcasting footage from the Polling Station. The Guntur Superintendent of Police was ordered to lodge a case against the attackers, including the MLA.'

General elections are being held across India from 19 April until 1 June 2024. The complex process has seven phases, to elect 543 members of the Lok Sabha parliament.

However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has faced criticism for silencing and arresting members of opposition parties.
