UK: RNLI Member's Perfect Throw Saves Stranded Vessel Crew
Poole, UK - May 10, 2024
In a display of skilled seamanship and swift response, a member of the RNLI demonstrated impeccable throwing technique to aid in the rescue of individuals stranded on a vessel firmly lodged in the mud.
The first incident unfolded on Friday (May 10) in Poole, where the RNLI's D class lifeboat was dispatched at noon following reports of a 30ft yacht grounded and listing in the Wareham channel. As the crew mobilized and set out, news arrived that the vessel had managed to free itself, capitalizing on the high tide. Nevertheless, the vigilant lifeboat crew conducted a welfare check to ensure the safety of all aboard and the seaworthiness of the vessel, before the yacht resumed its passage to Portland.
Returning to base by 1pm, the D class lifeboat was soon called into action once again at 5.30pm. This time, their mission was to assess the welfare of a 19-foot fishing vessel with two occupants stranded at the River Frome's entry point. With the vessel firmly lodged in the mud, the crew arrived to find the occupants awaiting the incoming high tide, expected at 11.30pm.
Under sunny skies and a slight south-easterly breeze, the crew sprang into action, packing a dry bag with provisions and employing a throw line to deliver essentials to the stranded individuals across the treacherous mud. Using their expertise, the crew also deployed an anchor to secure the vessel in anticipation of the rising tide, ensuring its safe refloating once water levels rose.
With the operation concluded successfully and the stranded individuals safe, the lifeboat crew returned to base by 8pm, where they faced the arduous task of washing off the clinging mud from their equipment. Despite the challenges posed by Poole Harbour's stubborn mud, the crew's dedication to duty remained unwavering, exemplified by their readiness for service once more.
