Controversy erupts as staff drink swimming pool water to prove cleanliness in China
Employees of an aquatic centre demonstrated the cleanliness of the water by drinking from the swimming pool together.
Bizarre video filmed in Shijiazhuang City in Hebei Province on May 13 shows four individuals dressed in matching uniforms confidently stating, "We safeguard the water quality for you," before each one took a cup, filled it from the pool, and drank it all.
On May 14th, a staff member from the implicated Chenfeng Aquatic Centre responded, saying, "It was voluntary. I also drank from it. I am one of the individuals in the video, and it was voluntary for us. The purpose of filming this video was to publicise that the water quality meets standards and to assure that our water is safe, not to encourage members to drink water. The water undergoes 24-hour circulation and is disinfected daily with the addition of fresh water. The water is very clean."
This action has sparked controversy. Some question the appropriateness of such behaviour, stating, "This can only prove that you're not afraid of dirt, but it doesn't prove the water quality," "Can disinfectant in the pool be consumed?" and "I only see the bitterness of adults, bowing to life."
The video was provided by local media with permission.
