Surgeons in India removed a mutton bone that had lodged in a patient's throat for a month.

Sriramulu, 66, had no teeth in the jaw for chewing and swallowed the meat without detecting the sharp bone that struck his oesophagus, which was close to his heart.

He was taken by his family to the hospital but was initially misdiagnosed to have stomach issues until he was transferred to LB Nagar Kamineni Hospital in Hyderabad.

Footage shows the medics performing endoscopic procedure to remove the piece of bone from the old man's food pipe.

Dr Radhika Nittala said: 'The elderly patient underwent an endoscopic procedure to remove the foreign body from his oesophagus.

'After the treatment, Sriramulu was recommended to follow a liquid diet to speed up healing.'

Medical experts say a foreign body stuck in the airway can cause choking and other serious complications if not removed promptly.

The treatment for such cases depends on the location of the foreign body. If it is in the airway, a laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy are necessary to remove the object safely.

For objects lodged in the oesophagus, an esophagoscopy is performed using special tools to extract the item.
