Furious hotel owner chases transgender person out of female restroom
A furious hotel owner chased a transgender person out of the female restroom after alleged complaints from other guests.
The owner of JDL Residences Hostel confronted tourist Jules Balais as they stepped out of the toilet in the third-floor building.
Staff claimed the trans person had allegedly entered the bathroom while the females were taking a shower in Albay province, the Philippines on May 12.
Footage shows the hosteler looking frustrated as his wife tried to stop him during the argument. He said in the video: ‘Because we've had females complaining.'
The customer Jules said while recording the incident: 'So this guy called me a male. He is misgendering me.'
Jules was interrupted by the wife who said ‘this [taking a video] is against the law'.
They replied to her: ‘Please don't call me a sir.'
The two hostelers and Jules were climbing down the stairs to the reception area when the angry husband snatched the phone.
At the reception area, the confrontation continued, with the phone still in the hands of the hosteler who said: ‘I have a lot of gay friends but they follow the rules.'
The hosteler said in a statement later: ‘The woman in white is one of the female guests who complained about The Guest who used the female bathroom instead of the male bathroom.'
While Jules signed out at the logbook, the owner went on: ‘It is called respect… We respect the rules of the accommodation and the property.'
Jules went out of the gate where their phone was only then returned and left bound for the capital Manila.
Jules said: ‘I stayed there overnight. I simply booked a fan room, thinking it was a mixed-gender hostel like most normal hostels.
‘Upon inquiring, they only mentioned fan and aircon dorm-type rooms. I wasn't informed and did not consent to be assigned in the men's dorm.
'And I was only told not to use the female bathroom that one time. That was right before I was going to check out, and the owner himself came rushing over while spewing profanities and transphobic slurs at me.'
The owner said in his statement that 'staff gave repeated requests to the transgender guest to instead use the male bathroom'.
In a statement, the hostel said the transgender guest entered the bathroom while someone was taking a bath. It said: ‘At JDL Residences, we support and accept all types of people, regardless of their race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation and gender identity.
‘We kindly ask for your understanding that as a business, we have policies set in place that we all must follow, bearing in mind the comfort of our guests. We are committed to providing a safe, secure, and respectful environment for all of our customers. We only ask that our policies also be followed to ensure a harmonious stay.'
Meanwhile, the Albay governor Edcel Greco Lagman told local media they would look into the incident as the province has anti discrimination ordinances.
He said: 'Proper implementation of the ordinance should be done, we will ask the police to investigate.'
