New York, NY, USA - May 14, 2024

The Portal, an innovative interactive art installation created by Lithuanian artist Benediktas Gylys, has opened in New York City, allowing viewers to communicate in real time with people 4,828 kilometres away in Dublin, Ireland.

Located in the busy Flatiron South Public Plaza, the artwork allows passers-by in both cities to establish a visual connection through a live stream available 24/7.

Benediktas Gylys described "The Portal" as a tangible demonstration of "the power of art to transcend physical barriers". This work not only aims to be a bridge between two cities separated by the Atlantic Ocean but also a window to interaction free of geographical limitations.
"The portals are an invitation to meet people across borders and differences and to experience our world as it really is: united and one," Gylys said, highlighting the essence of human connections across physical and cultural boundaries.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daithi de Roiste, echoed this sentiment by highlighting how the Portals project aligns with the vision of a more inclusive Irish capital. "The Portals project embodies this, bringing together technology, engineering and art to bring communities from around the world together and enable people to meet and connect outside of their social circles and cultures," she said, highlighting the social and cultural impact of the initiative.
