Afghanistan: Residents of northern Afghanistan in dire straits after devastating floods
Baghlan, Afghanistan - May 14, 2024
Storyline:
Exclusive footage by China Global Television Network (CGTN) showed the devastation in Afghanistan's regions hardest hit by last Friday's storms and flash floods, which saw sudden surges of water destroying homes and disrupting the lives of tens of thousands.
More than 330 people were killed as the disaster hit major parts of the provinces of Baghlan, Takhar, Badakhshan and Ghor of Afghanistan, according to the Afghanistan office of the World Food Programme and local Afghan officials.
A WHO report released on Sunday painted a grim picture of the devastation in Baghlan Province, northern Afghanistan. The floods caused horrific damage, destroying over 2,000 homes and claiming the lives of roughly 300 people. Additionally, around 100 individuals were injured.
The flood in Baghlan province began in the afternoon of May 10, affecting several districts including Nahrin, Baghlan Markazi, and Burka, said the report.
The WHO said the situation remains critical, as thousands have no access to food and shelter. Officials say the death toll is likely to rise, as the country braces for more bad weather.
Afghanistan has been experiencing heavy rain and floods in the past month, leading to many casualties and property damage.
