Boeing 747 makes emergency landing at Indonesia airport due to engine fire
A Boeing 747 plane made an emergency landing in Indonesia when its engine caught fire during take-off on Wednesday.
Footage shows the Jumbo Jet leaving the runway at the Makassar Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport when flames erupted on May 15.
The airline, Garuda Indonesia, said flight GA1105 departing for Saudi Arabia was forced to turn back and landed at 5:15 pm local time. All 450 passengers and 18 crew members were unharmed.
Garuda president director Irfan Setiaputra said in a statement: 'The decision was made by the pilot in command immediately after takeoff, considering engine problems that required further examination after sparks of fire were observed in one of the engines.'
The passengers were flying to Saudi Arabia for the Muslim hajj pilgrimage.
Garuda said it arranged accommodation for them while looking for a replacement flight.
The airline has just one of the iconic 747s in its fleet. However, due to the rising costs of operating the double decker plane, it is unclear how long the plane will remain in service.
Several major carriers, including British Airways and Thai Air, have offloaded their Jumbo Jets in recent years. The rival Airbus A380 is facing a similar fate, with smaller more fuel-efficient aircraft taking their places in fleets.
