Watch a Thames barge appear to 'powerslide' with the tide off Kent, UK
The unusual spectacle of a Thames sailing barge appearing to 'powerslide' was seen off Kent, UK this morning (May 18).
Thames barge Edith May (built in 1906) - was seen sliding rapidly sideways as it approached WW2 shipwreck SS Richard Montgomery off Sheerness - due the effects of the tide.
As there was very little wind to propel the barge forward, and with the camera focussed on the fixed object of the wreck, the barge can be seen being pulled sideways by the strength of the outgoing tide.
Footage also shows Thames sailing barge Cambria nearly becalmed by the conditions.
