Brazil: Flood death toll rises to 155

State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil - May 17, 2024

The torrential rains and floods affecting southern Brazil since the end of April have killed at least 155 people, according to the official death toll released Friday by the authorities.

Rio Grande do Sul, a state bordering Uruguay and Argentina, is the worst affected region with 154 fatalities and 98 people missing, while the other death toll has been recorded in the neighbouring state of Santa Catarina.

Friday's death toll is three more than the previous day and the number of missing people has dropped by six.
