Heavy rain has battered multiple cities in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region this weekend, causing severe waterlogging of streets and traffic disruptions, local authorities said on Sunday.
Some of these authorities had to implement a variety of safety initiatives to protect residents against the floods.
In the period from Saturday morning to Sunday morning, the northern, central and coastal areas of this region saw heavy rain, with the cities of Qinzhou, Fangchenggang and Nanning experiencing torrential downpours.
Local meteorological authorities in Guangxi issued a red alert for extreme rainfall early on Sunday morning, with many residents and vehicles stranded in waist-deep water in Nanning, the regional capital.
Over 30 passenger train trips have been suspended from Saturday to Monday morning due to heavy downpours, according to China Railway Nanning Group Co., Ltd.
As of 3 a.m. on Sunday, Longmengang Township of the city of Qinzhou had witnessed one-hour precipitation of 189.6 millimeters, breaking Guangxi's hourly rainfall precipitation record.
By 5 p.m. on Sunday, the heavy rains had also caused the relocation of about 280 people in Nanning. The local government there has deployed a total of 2,982 emergency response personnel, 569 vehicles and 105 sets of pumping equipment for flood control and disaster relief purposes.
Heavy rains are expected to lash the eastern and coastal areas of the region during the next 24 hours, according to weather forecasts.
