Spectacular Virga clouds captured over China during sudden hailstorms
Spectacular virga clouds were captured over China during sudden hailstorms.
Residents witnessed the rare phenomenon where rain clouds appeared like a veil connecting the sky and the earth in Jinan, Shandong, China, on May 18.
Footage shows raindrops pouring from the clouds along with lightning.
Zheng Lina, the chief forecaster at the Jinan Meteorological Observatory, explained in a local interview that this meteorological marvel is called 'virga,' which occurs when raindrops evaporate continuously as they fall, creating streak-like suspensions.
Virga happens during high temperatures in summer, which leads to localized convective weather conditions.
