Monkey terror forced an entire Indian village to go into hiding after the enraged primates injured six people.

The hungry primates had been chasing locals and stealing their food, causing the residents to lock themselves in their homes in Cuttack, Odisha, during a rampage on May 17.

Footage shows a kid who was wounded by the rogue animals and the men who came to scare them away with sticks. A mother had a bandage on her legs after being bitten by one of the monkeys.

Despite being chased away by the fathers, the monkeys only retreated on top of trees refusing the leave the neighbourhood.

Among the injured are Bharti Das, Himanshu Das, and Dologobinda Behera who was transferred from Mahanga Hospital to Cuttack SCB Medical College due to severe injuries.

The residents said they are seeking help from authorities as they could not go out their houses safely without carrying a stick for protection.

India does face challenges related to monkey populations in some urban areas. Efforts to sterilize and relocate monkeys have had limited success as their populations keep growing in urban areas due to available food sources.
